Signs Your Marriage May Be in Trouble

Posted on January 16, 2023 in Divorce

Austin divorce lawyerTraditionally, the month of January is when many people set their “New Year resolutions,” often focusing on making changes in their lifestyles as a way to achieve healthier and happier lives. It is also the month that has the highest number of divorce filings as some people choose another way to start the year off with a fresh start.

If you feel as if you are at a crossroads in your marriage and unsure if divorce is the right choice for you, the following signs are good indicators of what the state of your marriage may be.

No Future

In a solid marriage, when spouses daydream about the future, their partner is right there beside them. If a spouse imagines themselves living somewhere else – without their spouse – when they think about their future, this is a strong sign the marriage is broken. Fantasizing about being single or in a relationship with someone else is a definite indicator that there are problems in the marriage that may be unfixable.

Constant Battles

Another sign of a broken marriage is one where the couple is always arguing, perpetually butting heads, to the point of being in a constant state of acrimony. If you are feeling emotionally drained, if even silly disagreements turn into major and/or demeaning fights, this is a clear sign the relationship is not a healthy one.

Drifting Apart

Although it is healthy for spouses to have separate interests and activities apart from one another, if you do not enjoy spending time with your spouse and look for reasons to spend time away from them, this is another sign that it may be time to reevaluate the relationship.

Cheating or Emotional Infidelity

The drifting apart mentioned above can sometimes lead to infidelity. Even emotional infidelity can be a red flag that partners are not on the same page in the marriage, particularly when it comes to emotional support and intimacy.

Moving Assets

A major red flag that the marriage is headed for divorce is if a spouse begins to move assets around, transfers into the children’s names, trusts, etc. This could be a sign that the spouse is making plans to file for divorce but is trying to prevent the other spouse from getting their fair share of the marital estate.
